Predicting the Future of Dental Amalgam Use and FDA Regulation

2018-01-19T16:56:48-05:00

By Michael D. Fleming, DDS This article was published in the February 2013 edition of "DentalTown" Magazine There is a no greater challenge in dentistry these days than accurately predicting the future of dental amalgam use and FDA regulation. Given the more restrictive trends in federal and international regulatory policy with respect to mercury in general, and dental amalgam mercury in particular, it is very timely to address the current state of amalgam regulation, discuss common misconceptions in the ongoing amalgam safety debate and offer recommendations for future amalgam use. Cicchetti 2 1 Department of Surgery, Yale University School of Medicine, USA 2 Child Study Center and Departments of Biometry and Psychiatry, Yale University School of Medicine, USA Abstract: The authors employed pharmacy utilization data to evaluate the health status of a representative sample of 600 dentists, matched to control subjects, for gender, age, geographical area, and insurance plan structure. Dentists demonstrated significantly more prescription utilization of specific illness medications than did Controls, for the following disease categories: Neuropsychological, Neurological, Respiratory, and Cardiovascular. Amalgam Vs. Tuna: which is more risky?

2018-01-20T21:28:25-05:00

Which delivers more mercury, dental amalgam or a tuna fish sandwich?  By  G. Mark Richardson, Ph.D.Risklogic Scientific Services Inc., Ottawa, ON CANADAIntroduction The debate concerning mercury (Hg) exposure from dental amalgam continues in North America (see, for example: Richardson et al., 2011; Richardson, in press). One response to this debate has been the assertion that one receives more mercury from eating a tuna fish sandwich than from dental amalgam fillings (Greger, 2012). Greger (2012) even suggests that a total of 29 amalgam-filled teeth are required to deliver the same mercury dose as eating 1 tuna fish sandwich per week. Of course, the [...]

Text of FDA’s Actual 2012 Amalgam Safety Proposal

2018-09-29T18:15:45-04:00

In January 2012, the FDA had actually prepared a "Safety Communication" that recommended reducing the use of mercury amalgam in the general population, and avoiding it in susceptible sub-populations: pregnant and nursing women children under six years of age people with allergy to mercury or other components people with neurological disease people with renal disease recognized the risk of occupational exposure for dental personnel The recommendations were never made public, and in January 2015, the FDA issued another statement saying that amalgam was unequivocally safe for everyone. Somehow, somewhere in the reaches of government and the Health and [...]

Completing a trifecta of refutation for the CAT studies, joining previous papers showing dose dependent effects of amalgam mercury on porphyrin metabolism and neurobehavioral performance, a new paper by David Geier et. al. shows exposure to mercury from amalgam is directly correlated with urinary mercury in children.   Hum Exp Toxicol. 2012 Jan;31(1):11-7. Mutter, J, 2011: Is Amalgam Safe For Humans?

2018-01-20T20:07:31-05:00

Journal of Occupational Medicine and Toxicology 2011, 6:2 doi:10.1186/1745-6673-6-2 Abstract: It was claimed by the Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR)) in a report to the EU-Commission that "....no risks of adverse systemic effects exist and the current use of dental amalgam does not pose a risk of systemic disease..." SCENIHR disregarded the toxicology of mercury and did not include most important scientific studies in their review. But the real scientific data show that: (a) Dental amalgam is by far the main source of human total mercury body burden. This is proven by autopsy studies which found [...]

Amalgam Risk Assessments 2010

2018-01-19T16:26:16-05:00

On December 14 and 15, 2010, the FDA convened a scientific panel to re-examine the issue of mercury exposure from amalgam dental fillings. Two private foundations, assisted by IAOMT, commissioned G. Mark Richardson, PhD, of SNC Lavallin, Ottawa, Canada, formerly of Health Canada, to provide the scientific panel and FDA regulators with a formal risk assessment using the latest information from the scientific literature.  Previously published risk assessments dated from the 1990's.  Meanwhile, newer studies have uncovered more toxicity produced by lower levels of mercury exposure, and various government agencies have been reducing their allowed exposure levels. The final work [...]

IAOMT-Sponsored Petition to Reverse FDA Classification of Amalgam

2018-01-19T16:25:07-05:00

The 2009 IAOMT prepared the attached petition for a group of citizens as part of an effort to use all available legal means to overturn the FDA's classification of dental amalgam as a Class II device. The thrust of the petition is found in this quote: "We have no doubt that the FDA has the resources and expertise to properly assess the risks associated with dental amalgam. Sadly, the FDA's clear priority is to defend at all costs the continued use of mercury in dentistry - even at the expense of public health. It is not surprising, therefore, that FDA [...]

This article offers a practical assessment of the cost implications of an outright total ban on amalgam use as well as a partial ban in children, pregnant women and women of childbearing age. In addition, we discuss trends in amalgam use and the impact of a ban in these populations on the future utilization of broad based dental services. Methods. We utilized the American Dental Association 2005-06 Survey of Dental Services Rendered and Dental Economics Fee Surveys for 2006 and 2007 to evaluate the current levels of amalgam [...]

FDA Dental Staff "White Paper" on Amalgam

2018-01-19T15:57:25-05:00

This is the famous "White Paper" presented by the FDA dental division staff to the Scientific Advisory Panel in September, 2006, purporting to represent the available scientific literature on mercury exposure from amalgam dental fillings, and which supported the notion of amalgam safety. The panel ultimately voted 13-7 to reject the idea that the literature was adequately searched and that amalgam safety was proven. View Article: FDA Dental Staff "White Paper" on Amalgam

Critiques of the Children’s Amalgam Trials

2018-01-20T20:02:14-05:00

In 2006, the Journal of the American Medical Association published two articles that have been widely regarded as proving that amalgam dental fillings are safe for children: Timothy A. Rouen, et. Al., Neurobehavioral effects of dental amalgam in children, JAMA 295(15): 1784-92. 2006. David C. Bellinger, et. al., Neuropsychological and renal effects of dental amalgam in children, JAMA 295(15): 1775-83. 2006 IAOMT members realized immediately that, once again, the fix was in. These studies were flawed in a myriad of ways, both scientifically and ethically. In the attached articles, Sandy Duffy, JD, finds that the process of informed consent in [...]
