In response to the FDA’s call for public comment in regard to its intention to finally classify pre-encapsulated dental amalgam, the IAOMT submitted two papers in its own name. One was a paper from the Scientific Advisory Board setting out the latest research that indicts amalgam as an unacceptably risky source of mercury exposure. The second was an exhaustive compendium of scientific, legal and clinical reasons why amalgam should be banned, or at least placed in Class III.
In a separate submission, an IAOMT member and a health economist refute the widely held notion that banning amalgam would drive up the cost of dental care to the point that the poor would be excluded.
