Subject: RE: Contact Us Form Submission
Dear Dr. Stevens,
Thank you for contacting the National MS Society. The purpose of our statement is not to discuss the safety of mercury in the human body, but to make it clear that the removal of amalgam fillings has not been shown to have a beneficial impact on MS symptoms or on the course of MS. In fact, for a short time after amalgam removal, there may be an increase in blood mercury levels. There is also no evidence that MS is caused by the presence of mercury amalgams.
In terms of the toxicity of mercury, dental amalgams account for only 10 percent or less of the total mercury consumed by an individual; most of it comes from food, pollution, paints, disinfectants, and medications. It is for all these reasons that we will continue to let people with MS know that there is no reason to have their dental amalgams removed.
Thank you again for taking the time to contact us.
Best wishes, Rosalind Kalb
